First They Came Poster – Martin Niemöller Inspired WWII Remembrance Wall Art
First They Came – A Powerful Reminder of the Cost of Silence
When injustice reaches others, silence is never without consequence.
Inspired by the enduring warning of German pastor Martin Niemöller, this striking historical remembrance poster explores the importance of courage, conscience and speaking out against persecution.
The artwork depicts a solemn procession of figures walking towards a concentration camp beneath a dramatic sunset. Railway tracks disappear into the distance, while vivid red poppies provide a poignant symbol of remembrance against the dark landscape.
The words FIRST THEY CAME stand above the scene, accompanied by an original reflection on the consequences of remaining silent in the face of injustice.

The Story Behind the Artwork
Martin Niemöller (1892–1984) was a German Lutheran pastor who became known for his post-war reflections on the failure to oppose Nazi persecution.
His famous statement, commonly known as First They Came, remains one of the most recognisable warnings about the dangers of silence and indifference.
Our artwork offers a contemporary visual interpretation of that message, using original wording rather than reproducing the historical statement.
Because remembering history is about more than looking backwards. It is about understanding the choices we make today.
